With such diverging views on matters of public transportation, many quite hardened, it is difficult to write an introduction to this site. I'm torn between delving directly into the specifics of the proposal and first presenting a broader and comparative picture to assuage those who are so 'anti' public transit that they don't want to read about specifics. The latter will give critical commentary on other mass transit implementations that will also help those who are pro-rail gain a more critical appreciation of the subject.
There will, also, be aspects of this proposal which will have each reader saying 'No way, Jose!' And, yet, if I can hold the attention, and hopefully opened minds, of the readers long enough, just perhaps satisfaction for all can be achieved.
First, let me say that this proposal is suggesting an implementation of rail transit not yet seen in the U.S. Thus, there is no other rail implementation in the U.S. whose costs and results can readily be used to condemn it. While it will certainly have some characteristics in common with other systems, this proposal aims to shrink the costs and increase the benefits of urban rail transit. Give it a look with an open mind towards improving the mobility of your city.
